The Habanero chilli (Capsicum chinense) is one of the hottest pepper varieties grown, native to the Caribbean and the Yucatán Peninsula. It bears small, lantern-shaped fruit, green at first and turning orange, red or yellow when ripe, with a distinctive fruity aroma alongside its extreme heat. Its very high capsaicin content places it high on the Scoville scale, and it is used sparingly in hot sauces and marinades. The plant needs a long, warm season with plenty of light and rich, well-drained soil. It grows best in pots or under cover, where steady warmth helps the fruit ripen.
