Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) is a vegetable of the Brassicaceae family, grown for its compact green heads. The clusters of unopened flower buds are eaten boiled, steamed or in salads, and are very rich in vitamins, fibre and antioxidants. The plant prefers cool weather and fertile soils rich in organic matter, with regular watering. After the main head is cut, the plant often produces side shoots with smaller heads. Broccoli is considered one of the healthiest vegetables, recommended as part of a balanced diet.
