Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) is an aromatic perennial of the Allium family. Its slender tubular leaves have a fine onion flavour and are used fresh in salads, cheeses, sauces and omelettes. The plant forms dense clumps, returns year after year and produces decorative, edible purple flowers. It prefers fertile, moist soils in sun or partial shade, and is harvested by cutting the leaves. Chives attract bees and are an easy herb, ideal for pots.
