Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a tropical perennial plant with long, fragrant leaves that smell of lemon. The tender stems at the base are used in Asian cooking for soups, curries and aromatic teas. The plant forms dense clumps of leaves, prefers warmth, sun and humidity, and is sensitive to cold. In our climate it is grown in a pot and sheltered over winter. Besides its culinary use, lemongrass oil is prized for its fresh scent and insect-repellent effect.
