Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a semi-woody perennial aromatic plant of the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean. Its tiny, highly fragrant leaves are a kitchen essential, flavouring meat, sauces and vegetables. The plant forms low cushions, is drought-tolerant and prefers sun and poor, well-drained soils. It has recognised antiseptic properties and is used in teas to support the respiratory tract. Its small pinkish-lilac flowers are very attractive to bees, making it a good nectar plant.
