Hops (Humulus lupulus) is a vigorous perennial climber, best known for the cones used in brewing beer. The female cones contain resins and oils that give beer its characteristic bitterness and aroma. The plant can grow several metres in a season, climbing supports, and returns each year from its rhizomes. It prefers sun, deep fertile soils and regular watering. Besides their use in beer, hop cones also have calming properties, used in teas and scented pillows.
