The sweet pepper, known scientifically as Capsicum annuum, is an annual vegetable plant of the Solanaceae family, native to Central and South America. It forms compact bushes bearing fleshy, sweet fruit in various colours — green, yellow, red or orange, depending on the variety and ripeness. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and antioxidants, and is appreciated fresh in salads as well as cooked, stuffed or preserved. Peppers need warmth, full light and fertile, well-drained soil, and are frost-sensitive. They are widely grown in gardens, greenhouses and polytunnels, and are among the most popular vegetables in Romanian cooking.
