The chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a pepper variety grown for its hot fruit, rich in capsaicin, the compound that gives it its burning taste. The plant is annual, forms branched bushes and produces small, elongated or conical fruit that turn from green to red, yellow or orange when ripe. It is used as a seasoning — fresh, dried or ground — flavouring Mexican, Asian and Mediterranean dishes. It prefers warmth, sunny exposure and fertile, well-drained soils, and is very sensitive to cold. Beyond its culinary role, the chilli also has stimulant properties and is prized as an ornamental container plant.
