Okra, known scientifically as Abelmoschus esculentus, is an annual plant valued both for the beauty of its flowers and for its edible pods. It is a common vegetable in Asian, African and South American cooking, and is gaining popularity in Europe too. The elongated green pods are harvested young and cooked in stews, soups and dishes, with a slightly mucilaginous texture. The plant needs warmth, full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, and is sensitive to cold. Its yellow, hibiscus-like flowers make okra decorative as well as culinary.
