Bitter melon (Momordica charantia), also known as momordica, is a tropical climbing plant of the Cucurbitaceae family, grown for its characteristically bitter fruit. The fruit has a wrinkled green surface and is used in Asian cooking, cooked or in teas, and valued for its properties. The plant produces yellow flowers and tendrils with which it clings to supports. It needs a warm climate, moisture and fertile soil, and grows best on trellises. In traditional medicine, the fruit and leaves are used to support normal blood sugar levels.
