Sweetcorn (Zea mays) is an annual cereal grown for its cobs of sweet, tender kernels. The yellow, sugar-rich kernels are eaten boiled, roasted or grilled, and are a summer treat. The plant grows tall, needs plenty of sun, warmth and fertile soil, and is sown in blocks for good pollination. The cobs are harvested at the milk stage, when the kernels are at their sweetest. Sweetcorn differs from field maize and is highly prized as a fresh vegetable.
