It has climbing stems with tendrils and white or coloured flowers, and prefers the cool weather of spring. The seeds are rich in protein, fibre and vitamins, and are eaten fresh, frozen or dried. Being a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, improving its fertility. Peas are sown early and are among the first vegetables harvested from the garden.
