Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a common perennial with stinging leaves, very rich in vitamins, iron and minerals. The young leaves are used cooked, in soups, purées and pies, the sting disappearing with cooking. The plant is traditionally used as a spring tonic and for teas that benefit the body. It grows vigorously on nitrogen-rich soils, in sun or partial shade, and returns year after year. Nettle is also a valuable natural fertiliser, used to make plant feeds.
