Caraway (Carum carvi) is a biennial aromatic plant of the Apiaceae family, grown for its fragrant seeds. The seeds, with their warm, slightly aniseed aroma, are used in bread, cheeses, cabbage dishes, charcuterie and drinks. The plant has white flowers in umbels and prefers sun and fertile, well-drained soils. The seeds have recognised digestive properties and are also used in teas for bloating. Caraway is a traditional spice in Central and Eastern European cooking.
